Understanding the future development trends of multi-axis sensors
2020-11-06
In the IT market, sensing is not a new technology. It's been mature for a long time and its applications are already widespread. Industry experts point out that sensors are the frontline of sensor networks. In terms of technology, motion sensing is currently the most prevalent technology, while sound sensing is still under development, but it has considerable future potential.
Looking ahead to future sensing technology trends, whether it's the Internet of Things or wearable devices, there are still several common trends for future sensing components. First is system multi-axialization. The development of sensing systems towards multi-axialization is an important trend in the sensing application market. In fact, the multi-axialization of sensing systems has never stopped, evolving from the early single-axis sensors to the currently common 3-axis, 6-axis, 9-axis, 10-axis, 11-axis, and even new 12-axis sensing systems. Multi-axialization is an irreversible path.
So, what are the axes of a so-called "multi-axis" sensor? Which axes are necessary, and which are secondary? Generally speaking, the 9-axis system consisting of a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, and a 3-axis electronic compass has become almost standard equipment for smartphones. These three sensors can accomplish the vast majority of applications and can be considered the "three main axes" of the sensing system.
In addition to these three sensors, devices such as altimeters, pressure sensors, thermometers, and light sensors are being added to sensing systems, becoming members of the multi-axialization trend. Since multi-axialization is a given trend, more manufacturers will continue to develop sensing platforms with more axes in the future to meet market application needs.
