What's different about smart sensors?

2020-11-17

With the development of automated and intelligent measurement and control systems, traditional sensors can no longer meet the requirements for certain data processing capabilities and self-inspection, self-calibration, and self-compensation functions. The research and application of intelligent sensors and multi-functional sensors have entered the market.

Structure and Characteristics of Intelligent Sensors

Sensors, like human senses, are important tools for acquiring information. They play a huge role in industrial production, national defense construction, and scientific and technological fields. However, compared to the rapid development of computers, sensors, as the "senses," are far behind the development speed of computers, which act as the "brain".

With the development of automated and intelligent measurement and control systems, sensors are required to have high accuracy, high reliability, good stability, and certain data processing capabilities, and to be able to perform self-inspection, self-calibration, and self-compensation. Traditional sensors can no longer meet these requirements.

In addition, it is also difficult to manufacture high-performance sensors solely by improving material processes. It is necessary to combine computer technology with sensor technology to compensate for its performance deficiencies. Computer technology has brought about a huge transformation in sensor technology. The combination of microprocessors (or microcomputers) and sensors has produced powerful intelligent sensors. These are known as Intelligentsensors or Smartsensors abroad. In addition, traditional sensors generally can only measure one parameter. In some cases, small, multi-functional sensors that can simultaneously measure multiple parameters are needed. Many scientists around the world have paid attention to this area of development and have already developed some multi-functional sensors.
