Reasons for the slow development of China's sensor industry
2020-11-17
Compared to other countries, the slow development of China's sensor industry is mainly due to differences in understanding. There is prejudice and a one-sided understanding of sensors, and a lack of national strategic awareness. Because sensors belong to different industries and departments, there is a phenomenon of multiple management, making it difficult to reach a consensus on development, and a lack of policy support leads to industry fragmentation and an inability to form a series of products.
Among nearly 5,000 instrument and meter enterprises in China, more than 1,600 produce sensitive components and sensors to varying degrees, of which more than 95% are small and micro enterprises. On the one hand, there is a lack of sufficient human resources, material resources, process technology conditions, and other resource allocation, and the industrialization foundation is weak; on the other hand, the market entry barriers are too high, and there is a lack of corresponding application development and technological innovation capabilities. The overall technical level and parameter performance indicators of products, especially the reliability and stability indicators, are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of similar foreign products, and cannot meet the market's requirements for enterprise qualifications and supporting capabilities. China currently lacks leading enterprises to lead and drive the industry, lacks international brands, market influence, competitive advantages, and basic research capabilities, resulting in less than 3% of specialized enterprises in the industry; core chips are mostly imported, and high-end products are almost 100% imported; the overall process technology level lags behind advanced countries by 10 to 15 years.
Currently, only 13% of domestic sensor companies have an output value exceeding 100 million yuan, and there are fewer than 200 such companies nationwide. In view of the current situation, characteristics, and problems of the domestic industry, combined with the technical process characteristics of sensors, the industry expects to gather dozens or more domestic and foreign sensor companies and research institutes in economically developed regions with technological advantages, forming an industrial cluster or base with product technology process characteristics and industrialization scale advantages, as well as international market influence, to form an international sensor characteristic industrial park with an annual sales revenue exceeding 100 billion yuan (15 billion US dollars) and an annual growth rate exceeding 20%. This will form an industrial chain structure (industrial ecosystem) with sensitive components as the core, intelligent, networked, and modular integrated applications as the innovation subject, and the Internet of Things and smart cities as the application goals. At the same time, it will have a six-dimensional integrated ecological environment of government, industry, academia, research, application, and service, achieving industrial cluster development, forming China's "dual ecological" sensor industry chain, and creating an international sensor industrial park with distinct industrial characteristics and prominent locational advantages—Sensor Valley.
